MRSA Infections are at Epidemic Proportions!

MRSA:  Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

MRSA is an isolate of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus characterized by antibiotic resistance to all penicillins, including many other antibiotics. MRSA was discovered for the first time in 1961 in the UK, but it is now widespread in the hospital setting. MRSA is commonly termed a superbug and is making headlines worldwide by killing more people than HIV and AIDS.

A staph infection, especially an MRSA Staphylococcus infection, is at best a nuisance causing mild discomfort. At worst, it can be life threatening. Boils, abscesses, pimples, carbuncles, and other pus filled wounds that won't heal are often the result of a staph infection. These often result in fever, intense pain, skin shedding and thick scarring. They erupt in the most painful places including the underarms, the buttock area, and around the waist. Once colonized on your skin, there can be a recurrance of Staph Aureaus (MRSA) causing additional pain and discomfort.

Antibiotics are no longer working against staph infections as effectively as they once did. Twenty five years ago, only 2% of Staph infections were immune to antibiotics. Now staph is resistant to antibiotics nearly 70% of the time.

Who created this super bug?

Doctors, patients and society must share the blame for this problem starting with the over-use of antibiotics prescribed for viral infections that did not require antibiotics, to antibiotics used in our food supply, to anti-bacterial soaps used on our bodies.

The dilemma is that the resistant strains of staph (MRSA) is here and spreading into the general population at a phenomenal rate. No longer are infections turning up just in nursing homes and hospitals but now in college environments, high school wrestling teams, football teams, pre-schools and our community gym. MRSA, now termed community acquired Staph Aureas (ca-MRSA), affects nearly 54 million people worldwide. These include perfectly healthy people who are coming down with it. If you haven’t been affected, you may be soon.
